Math Lab

The Math Lab is a hub for mathematical learning, teaching, and resources at TES.  It is a space for teachers and students to explore mathematical ideas through hands-on discovery and thoughtful conversation.  Laura Sharpless, the TES Math Specialist, strives to make the Math Lab a welcoming and creative environment where everyone’s thinking is honored, mistakes are viewed as learning opportunities, and deep understanding is prioritized over speed.

About the Teacher:

Laura Sharpless joined TES as a fifth grade teacher in 2013. In 2017, Laura stepped into the role of Math Specialist for the school, a role that allows her to support math teaching and learning throughout the school. She loves exploring mathematical ideas with people of all ages, and is constantly in pursuit of the “just right” question to lead someone towards an "Ah Ha!" moment.

Before entering the classroom, Laura pursued her passion for education in the outdoors: on several tall ships in Connecticut, New York and Washington, and at Shelburne Farms in western Vermont. Laura is a graduate of Haverford College (BA) in geology, Antioch University New England (MEd) in Elementary Education, and the University of Vermont (MST) through the Vermont Mathematics Initiative.

Laura enjoys biking, hiking, gardening, singing, and crafting beautiful and useful things out of paper and wool. She lives in Norwich with her husband and two children.
